[Cable Knowledge] Types and Selection of Marine Cables

Marine cables, also known as marine cables, are wires and cables for power, lighting, and general control of various ships in rivers and seas and offshore oil platforms and other water structures.

According to different uses, marine cables can be classified as follows

  • Cables for lighting and power circuits;
  • Cables for control and communication circuits;
  •  Cables for telephone circuits;
  • Cables for distribution boards;
  • Cables for mobile equipment;
  •  Cables for wiring inside control equipment;
  • Cables for other special devices;

Selection principles for ship power cables

  1. Select the appropriate cable form according to the cable’s purpose, laying location and working conditions.
  2. Select the appropriate cable cross-section according to the working system of the electrical equipment, cable core and load current.
  3. Whether the short-circuit capacity of the fragmented cable meets the requirements is based on the calculation results of the system short-circuit current.
  4. Then judge whether the allowable current of the cable is greater than the load current, and correct the rated current carrying capacity of the cable according to the ambient temperature.
  5. Correct the rated current carrying capacity of the cable, and then determine whether the allowable current of the cable is greater than the load current, based on the correction coefficient of the wire harness laying.
  6. Judge whether the line voltage drop is less than the specified value and check the line voltage drop.
    7-If the setting value of the protection device cannot be changed, please re-select an appropriate cable mounting surface to determine whether the cable and the protection device are coordinated; if there is a conflict, determine whether the appropriate protection device or setting value can be changed.
